Even then, if you can sand out all the blemishes, you only need an experienced guy to shoot the clear if you can find someone that will do just that. You really have nothing to loose but the cost of paint if you do it yourself. I’ve only used Awlgrip that way, but if you are more than 5’ away you can’t tell it wasn’t sprayed. That way all your brush marks are only in the clear and nit so noticeable. Whatever you use, if you roll and tip or just brush on the paint, do your color, let it cure, then sand it perfectly smooth and THEN brush on your clear. Awlgrip for boats is a really good but expensive option. If you go with a roll and tip job with a roller and brush, many pints work out well. I usually put on more clear than I need just to make sure that I never sand thru it. Couple three coats of color then 3-5 coats of clear. Make sure everything is sanded down with a long board to keep it fair. Just take your time, adjust the gun shooting at cardboard, wear a good respirator and you can get a pretty good to excellent job out of it and save a lot of money. Luckily I have painted boats all my life with 2 part paints, so it wasn’t all foreign to me. You will need a good compressor and either buy or rent at least a decent spray gun. I did put up tarps all around, over and under as I was under a roof and on the patio right by the house. Did a few panel replacements where the rust was too much. I painted my 69 B in the back yard mostly. We get 126” of rain a year here by the coast. I live on the windward side of Hawaii island.
